Maruoka High School, built in 1913, is dedicated to preparing its students for university and the extremely difficult entrance exams. With 573 hard-working students this school year of 2006-2007 and 53 dedicated staff members, Maruoka High School sits atop a hill in the town of Maruoka, located a short 15 minute drive from Fukui City, the capital of Fukui
Prefecture, Japan. Fukui Prefecture is located on the west coast of central
Honshu, the main island of Japan. Weather in Maruoka can be treacherous due to
the sweeping winds coming from off of the Japan Sea and heavy snowfall during
winter, yet, the students always manage to find their way to school where they
learn and grow as they go into adulthood.
Maruoka High School is an academic high school where the curriculum is geared towards preparing students for higher education. The eight departments consist of Japanese Culture and Literature, Science, History, Physical Education, Home Economics, Performing
Arts, Math, and English Language. Each department has a dedicated number of
staff, who work with the students one on one as well as in the
classroom.
Students also have a very healthy and active club life. Three of Maruoka’s most well-known clubs include the rhythmic gymnastics club, the kendo club, and the soccer team. The soccer team had the distinct pleasure of getting eighth place in the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament held over Winter
Break of 2006. Other clubs include the shodo club (or calligraphy club), the tea
ceremony club, the cooking club, concert band, the sword and fan dance club,
baseball, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, among others.
Here at Maruoka High School, our teachers and students learn and grow together. They create an environment where education can flourish. The teachers at Maruoka High School work very hard every day to give our students a wonderful well-rounded education, and, in turn, our students diligently work on passing their exams while still having fun in
the environment our teachers have created for them.
